SILVEN, CGCS Superintendents Division Vice President Donald Silven, a Certified Golf Course Superintendent, has a wealth of experience in all aspects of the role of a golf course superintendent, including staff recruitment, training, retention and supervision as well as golf course design, renovation and maintenance. He has actively performed and supervised all maintenance, construction, installations and renovations on several golf courses and properties. This knowledge is essential in helping evaluate the capabilities of golf course superintendents. Donald served as Head Golf Course Superintendent at prestigious Warwick Country Club for over 15 years. Through his efforts, that clubs course earned the label of Pebble Beach East. His talents were later applied to oversee construction of 27 holes at Chukka Valley Country Club (now Hickory Valley Golf Club) in Gilbertsville, PA. His credentials were not lost on Wannamoisett Country Club (ranked as one of the top 100 golf courses by Golf Digest) when he was hired as its Head Golf Course Superintendent. Wannamoisett (Rumsford, RI) has been the site of the Northeast Amateur tournament (one of the top 4 amateur golf events) for the past 30 years. With his continued active affiliation with the Golf Course Superintendents of America (GCSAA), Donald has maintained significant industry contacts, supplementing CSCs existing database of potential candidates. He continues to maintain his long standing certification through participation in continuing education programs. Don is a past member in the affiliated chapters of the Philadelphia Association of GCSAA and GCSAA of New England. He remains active in the Rhode Island Association of GCSAA, having served on its board of directors and as President in 1975. | FRANK BUZZ GARVIN Golf Professionals Division Vice President Buzz Garvins extensive knowledge and excellent professional reputation as a PGA Professional are well recognized in the golf professional community. Buzz has a wealth of experience in all aspects of golf operations, having worked as a golf professional for over 30 years. While active on the PGA tour, Buzz began his formal club pro experience at Cherry Hills Country Club in Denver, CO. He also taught golf at Patty Jewett Golf Club and the Broadmoor Hotel (working for Ed Dudley) and at the Boca Raton Hotel (working for Gary Nixon and Sam Snead). He joined Nixon at Philmont Country Club in Huntington Valley, PA, as Assistant Pro, ultimately being promoted to Head Golf Pro. Buzz was named Pro of the Year by the PGAs Philadelphia Section. Under his guidance and supervision, Buzz steered nine of his assistants into head pro positions. After serving the members at Philmont for over 20 years, he became Head Pro at Overbrook Golf Club in Bryn Mawr, PA. When the prestigious Club at Admirals Cove in Jupiter, FL opened its operations in 1988, Buzz was recruited as Director of Golf. The Club, situated within a gated residential community, has an active golfing program with 45 holes on its championship courses. Until his retirement in 2001 (he continues to teach part time), Buzz oversaw all aspects of the golf operations including the supervision of a staff of over 30. Buzz has served on committees at both the National and Sectional levels of the PGA and other professional golf associations, including a stint as Philadelphia Section President (350+ members) and he continues his active involvement.
