I have to admit I wasn't looking for anything special. I was curious. I was more interested in a process of recognition: whatever charm and beauty and strangeness I recognized or discovered is what is described in these images—half document of where I had been, and half investigation of what had changed in Japan since living there three years ago. The lunch theme derives from a recognizable everyday object in Japanese life: the bento lunch box. This came about on a whim and has kept my interest all the time I was planning to show these photos. Now, in the center of the galleryalloggio alberghi Makati, stands a pile of “photo bentos.” Inside is a variety of items to feast on, emulating the bento’s unique use of variety, except this o-bento contains text and images. Playing off of ideas of cultural sustenance, and the prevalent ways images are thought of as for consumption and diversion, I bring to you 300 take-aways. The other simple idea behind the shashin-bento is for people to take it home with them. _Photography is all for the taking and since we so rarely give, I insisted that be a theme of this show. Unfortunately it only exists in words on this website. Should you be in Tokyo between August 26 and September 7, you should pick one up at Days Photo Gallery (www.daysphoto.com). |
